Taxiway over the A4 motorway.

The taxiway over the A4 is a great place to make pictures of the planes. This taxiway links the south side of the airport with the north side of the airport. Roughly all movements from the gates of pier A to pier D (except D3-D9 and D45-D57).

Regrettably it is never possible to say what will taxi by and what will not. The only certainty is that you will see KLM Cityhopper’ large fleet of Fokkers. What can also be said with almost complete certainty is that the freighters will be using this taxiway! This includes KLM’ new 747s, Martinair’ 747s and MD-11s, DAS Air Cargo DC-10s, Kalitta 747s, Emirates 747s and many other regular and irregular flights. Unfortunately you can rule out all other heavies. This taxiway is almost exclusively used for European flights.

Please note: this spot can be really quiet. Sometimes you will have half an hour with planes taxiing by every minute, and sometimes you will have half an hour of nothing at all! Check the peak times to find out when it is most likely to be busy. This taxiway is usually used for either northbound (departures) or southbound (arrivals) movements. This depends on the wind.

Directions.

This place is actually a walking distance away from the terminal! Get out of the terminal on the arrivals level. Go to the left and continue following the road. (walking past amongst other the ATC tower and various cargo fascilities). After about 10 to 15 minutes walking you will be at the flyover. The best spot is on the far left. You may need to go under the tunnel and watch planes from the other side, depending on the sun.

If you are too lazy to walk you can take bus 186/187/188/190/191/192/195/196/197/198/199 to “Schipholgebouw". From there it is just a small walk.
